The Prophets: Birth #1.

THE POINT. Click the icon.

Regardless of what you believe, there is no doubt one “Man” changed the face of planet earth. Western culture is grounded in Judaeo-Christian values. Jesus moved the world from stoning, pederasty, and bestiality, all routine practices in ancient civilization, to “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Mark 12:31

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

Does contemporary Western culture execute the values surrounding “Love thy neighbor” well? Hardly. But here is the importance – at least we understand the goal. We can’t move towards improvement if we don’t know what we are moving to and Judaeo-Christian values set the target. You have doubt about the claims associated with Jesus? Take a number. Anyone serious about their spirituality starts there, and I was no different.

My Story
2018. At this point, I’ve been aggressively “running my own tests” on the promises in the Bible for almost five years – I call it my “Research Project.” What got me started? Six words that made me jump off the couch to see who was behind me: “Those are you choices, not mine.” Click the icon.

The Question That Cannot Be Avoided

Who is Jesus of Nazareth?

Is Jesus of Nazareth the promised One in Isaiah 9:6 (top of page), written about 700 hundred years before His birth? Is He the savior of the world? Ask God and do your own research. I am convinced an Atheist who is not afraid to ask bold questions is more pleasing to God than a Christian who passively sits in a building called Church without asking any questions. Why? People who ask questions care enough to actively seek out the Truth. Some scholars estimate hundreds of Scripture pointing to Jesus as God’s answer to His promise in the Garden Story: Send One who will “… crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” Genesis 3:15  I am summarizing just a few to help you start your own Research Project. Click away…

Get Started

7So I shepherded the flock marked for slaughter, particularly the oppressed of the flock. Then I took two staffs and called one Favor and the other Union, and I shepherded the flock. 8In one month I got rid of the three shepherds.

The flock detested me, and I grew weary of them 9and said, “I will not be your shepherd. Let the dying die, and the perishing perish. Let those who are left eat one another’s flesh.”

10Then I took my staff called Favor and broke it, revoking the covenant I had made with all the nations. 11It was revoked on that day, and so the oppressed of the flock who were watching me knew it was the word of the Lord.

12I told them, “If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.” So they paid me thirty pieces of silver.

13And the Lord said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—the handsome price at which they valued me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter at the house of the Lord.” Zechariah 11:7-13

The Second Coming

14Then I broke my second staff called Union, breaking the family bond between Judah and Israel.

15Then the Lord said to me, “Take again the equipment of a foolish shepherd. 16For I am going to raise up a shepherd over the land who will not care for the lost, or seek the young, or heal the injured, or feed the healthy, but will eat the meat of the choice sheep, tearing off their hooves.” Zechariah 11:14-16

36“The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will say unheard-of things against the God of gods. He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed, for what has been determined must take place. 37He will show no regard for the gods of his ancestors or for the one desired by women, nor will he regard any god, but will exalt himself above them all. 38Instead of them, he will honor a god of fortresses; a god unknown to his ancestors he will honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and costly gifts. 39He will attack the mightiest fortresses with the help of a foreign god and will greatly honor those who acknowledge him. He will make them rulers over many people and will distribute the land at a price. Daniel 11:36-39

5The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months. 6It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. 7It was given power to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. 8All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world.”  Revelation 13:5-8

My Question: Why Do I Need Jesus?

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin.” Hebrews 4:15

My questions? Why do I need to go through Jesus to “go to the Father”? (John 14:6) What is it that I’ve done that requires the need for an intermediary? Those questions revealed the root of my problem. I didn’t understand enough about God the Giver to ever understand Jesus, His Gift. Once I was clear on God the Father and His impossible standard of perfection, the need for the gift of Jesus became painfully clear to me.

WATCH

Jesus. Just another great teacher? As C.S. Lewis points out in the clip below, to consider Jesus as nothing more than a “good teacher” is to ignore a few obvious problems. If Jesus was just another nice man gifted with a teaching skill, what do you do with all His claims of divinity? I know what I think, but I’m not trying to tell you what to think, I’m trying to give you some things to think about. Do your own research and come to your own conclusions because it is the most important decision you will ever make.

Eternity Is a Long Time.

“If anyone is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.” Luke 9:26

Eternity is a long time – I’ll be dead a whole lot longer than I am alive. This isn’t a decision to not think about. Hoping that in the end I was “a good enough” person, and all the other excuses I’d told myself while “hoping for the best” knowing I would “deal with God” when I die is not a good plan. I repeat, not a good plan. If you don’t believe in God, that is a different issue (spend some more time thinking about death and then come back), but for those of us who do believe in God, but haven’t really thought through the claims of Jesus, this is not wise.

Being “Busy” Won’t Impress God

“…  everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:13

What about God’s promise to save those who call on His name? He keeps His promise, we’ll get to that later in the course, but that promise just might not get you where you think it will get you. Read on. Not spending time doing much more than showing up in a building called Church means that regardless of what my flapping lips say, I don’t value God enough to even give these matters some effort. At some point I decided I’d rather “show up” having gotten it wrong through effort rather than “showing up” lazy and ignorant. Let’s see how my primary excuse would have sounded had I died “hoping” I was a “good enough” person. Too bad about that impossible standard of perfection God adheres to.

“Oh, You are there! I was going to look into this, really I was, but you only gave me 42 YEARS to figure this out – sorry, I was really “busy…

Busy? I am pretty sure that “busy” isn’t going to go well… It was my first sign of being a hypocrite. In my life, anything of value gets attention-period. Once that ran through my mind, I decided to make it my business to find out what Luke 9:26 (above) meant. So I started to investigate…

Science

You love science? Consider researching the Star of Bethlehem; the star associated with the birth of Jesus at Christmas. Consider. Just before the birth of Jesus, there was a very real star in place – the Heavens were different. This isn’t just folklore from the Bible, it is a fact.

For Consideration

According to the Bible, a rejection of Jesus is actually a rejection of God. Sadly, I loved Christmas long before I really understood its meaning and I was “raised” in a church. Observation tells me I am not alone in this challenge. You will be dead so much longer than you are alive. Why not DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH on the claim that Jesus is the very manifestation of the God the Father in a human body? Choose carefully because in essence you are answering a question: “At the end of my life, do I want to ‘get what I deserve’ based on God’s standard of perfection, or do I want to get what He offers? Grace.”

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.’ ” John 14:6

Summary

In this module, you were asked to consider the following statements:

  • It is impossible to “inherit” a relationship with God.
  • You must come to your own conclusion. “No choice,” is a choice to reject what God offers.
  • God is not afraid of our questions, disbelief or anger. Ask!
  • A good place to start your own “Research Project” is the Scripture confirming the divinity of Jesus.
  • Care enough about your own eternal destination to challenge everything. Truth rules.
